PROMINENT EAR AESTHETICS (OTOPLASTY)

Prominent ear aesthetics is a surgical procedure aimed at correcting the condition where the angle between the ears and the head is wider than ideal. Otoplasty generally involves reshaping the ear cartilage to position the ears further back and closer to the head. This operation is of great importance for increasing the social and psychological self-confidence of patients (especially individuals during childhood and adolescence).

Who is it Suitable For?

Otoplasty can be performed on individuals whose ear development is largely complete:

  • It can usually be performed starting from 5-6 years of age, when 90% of ear development is complete, before school age begins and psychological issues arise.
  • Suitable for anyone whose physical development is complete but is bothered by the prominent ear appearance and desires correction.
  • Asymmetrical cases where one ear is more prominent than the other.

SURGICAL APPROACHES (General Framework)

Otoplasty is usually performed through an incision made behind the ear, which is not visible.

Essentially two issues are corrected during the surgery: the inadequate formation of the ear fold (antihelical fold) and the ear sitting at too wide an angle from the head (conchal hypertrophy).

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is Otoplasty a permanent solution?

Yes, it is permanent. The permanent sutures placed in the newly shaped cartilage ensure that the ears maintain their new position for life. The success rate is very high.

A headband is usually required in the first week after surgery to protect the ears and reduce swelling. Normal life can be resumed after 1-2 weeks, but contact sports should be avoided for 6-8 weeks.

No. Since the incisions are hidden within the natural crease behind the ear, the scars become unnoticeable externally or very difficult to see once healing is complete.
