Nasal Congestion & Nasal Valve Insufficiency

The Nasal Valve is the narrowest area located just inside the nostril, which regulates the airflow entering the nose. When this valve weakens, narrows, or collapses due to various reasons (weak cartilage, trauma, or post-unsuccessful rhinoplasty), it is called Nasal Valve Insufficiency. It is one of the most difficult-to-diagnose and most bothersome causes of nasal obstruction for the patient. Insufficiency usually occurs in the external (nostril alae) or internal valve area.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can Nasal Valve insufficiency occur after nose aesthetics?

Yes, it can. Especially when the nasal dorsum is excessively reduced or cartilage support is insufficient, the nasal alae can weaken, leading to insufficiency. Therefore, preservation techniques are vital.

No, it is not permanent. Nasal sprays (decongestants) provide temporary relief. However, surgical intervention is the only permanent solution for structural problems like Deviation, Turbinate Hypertrophy, or Valve Insufficiency.

No, quite the opposite. The cartilage grafts used to repair valve insufficiency support the nasal alae, which both eases breathing and helps the alar appear more stable and aesthetic.
