REVISION RHINOPLASTY

Revision Rhinoplasty is a secondary (or later) surgical intervention performed to correct aesthetic or functional issues that have arisen in patients who have undergone one or more previous nose surgeries. It is a more complex and challenging process than primary rhinoplasty because the nasal structure has been compromised, cartilage tissue is diminished, and the wound healing process is complete. Our goal is to restore the natural appearance and healthy breathing function that the patient failed to achieve in the first surgery by using the most appropriate techniques.

Who is it Suitable For?

  • Aesthetic Deficiencies: Droopy or overly upturned nasal tip, collapse or persistent hump on the nasal dorsum, asymmetry, and an artificial appearance ("pinched" nose).
  • Functional Problems: Persistent difficulty breathing despite the previous surgery, or breathing difficulties that arose after the surgery (especially internal valve collapse).
  • Cartilage Deficiency: Weakness and collapse seen in the nasal tip or alae due to insufficient cartilage support.

PLANNING & SURGICAL APPROACHES

  • The success of revision surgery depends on comprehensive analysis and meticulous cartilage management.
  • Analysis: A detailed examination is performed to determine the extent of the damage in the nose, the remaining amount of cartilage, and the condition of the skin.
  • Cartilage Source: Since septal cartilage is usually insufficient, the nasal structure is rebuilt using ear or rib cartilage (costal cartilage).
  • Technique: Revisions are almost always performed using the Open Rhinoplasty technique, which provides the surgeon with the best visualization.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why is rib cartilage used in Revision Rhinoplasty?

Since the patient's own internal cartilage (septum) is often used in primary surgeries, the supportive cartilage is insufficient at the revision stage. Rib cartilage (Costal Cartilage) is the strongest and most abundant source of cartilage needed to rebuild the nasal framework.

Yes. Since revision operations require more extensive intervention and involve working with scar tissue, the reduction of swelling and the appearance of the final result may take slightly longer than the first surgery (usually 1.5 - 2 years).

Since the nasal anatomy has changed and the amount of cartilage has decreased, it is critically important that it be performed by surgeons with specific experience in this field, specializing in cartilage grafting and reconstruction.
